Developer and business platforms
Apple requires it for Developer Program organizations and uses it in Enterprise verification. Google Play normally requires it for organization accounts. Microsoft recommends DUNS for faster Store verification but accepts specified business documents instead.
Apple Business now treats DUNS as one possible Business ID and offers multiple verification methods. It should not be described as universally mandatory there.

FDA and supply chains
FDA currently recognizes DUNS as the acceptable UFI for food-facility registration. Drug-establishment instructions request the establishment’s number, not merely corporate headquarters; foreign registrations can also need agent and importer details.
Customers may request DUNS for supplier onboarding and cross-border entity matching. That is their process, not a general law. SAM.gov has used UEI instead of DUNS since 2022.
